The Wilkes County Health Department accepts Medicaid, NC Health Choice, private insurance including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna-Tyson Insurance, and offers a sliding fee scale for those who are uninsured.  The sliding fee scale is based on family size and income. HealthCare Connection is an integrated system working with, private and public physicians, Wilkes RegionalMedical Center, and the Wilkes County Health Department to provide access care to low-income, uninsured citizens of Wilkes County. The program provides preventive, primary and specialty care, and low-cost pharmaceuticals

Who is eligible for assistance with HealthCare Connection?

People who have:

  • Acute active health problems.
  • No access to health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, or VA benefits.
  • Total gross household income at or below 200% federal poverty level.
  • Age (21-64)
  • Residents of Wilkes County for at least the past 30 days.
  • Those who are willing to accept responsibility for complying with the medical advice provided.

Health Check/Health Choice

Free or low-cost health insurance for children and teens. Better health for your children, and peace of mind for you. Your child may qualify for Health Check (Medicaid) or NC Health Choice – free or low-cost health insurance for children under the age of 19.

Health Check Coordinator

Wilkes County Health Department has a Health Check Coordinator, who’s job is to assist you in getting the best care possible for your child/children in regards to well-check appointments and immunizations.  The Health Check Coordinator is a resource that you can call to get information about the Health Department, additional medical doctors, dentists and eye doctors in our county that accept Medicaid.

Northwest Community Care Network

Northwest Community Care Network offers educational and care management services to Carolina Access II Medicaid recipients.  Nurse Care Managers are available to provide educational services and case management services as well as referrals to resources for clients.  You may visit the website at for a list of care managers in your county.
